May weavings

May came and went without writing a blog post about my works in progress, so I thought I would share a few photos of finished pieces and a picture of what’s on one of the looms today.

I continued weaving “crackle weave” or “jamtlandsdräll” table runners last month, which will I will have on display at the League of NH Craftsmen’s Fair coming up in August. These were woven with polychrome warps:

I also had the opportunity to weave fabric for a bespoke flat cap. I used alpaca/silk for the fabric, which feels quite light but warm. Here is the finished cap:

Both looms have been continually warped as I am in “production mode,” in as far as that is possible when one is operating traditional floor looms. Kitchen towels and placemats have been on the looms:

The placemats shown in the above photograph are woven in a turned taquete structure. Here is a new kitchen towel design that I’m working on right now:

New kitchen towels! (I really like this one.)

I hope to weave some of these log cabin bordered kitchen towels in blue, too. There’s always the hemming/finishing that comes after weaving the cloth, so I have to make sure to allow time for that task as well.

Sourdough bread making has become a bit of an obsession here. I am still a novice, but I am pleased to say that all loaves have been edible so far and have a nice rise. Here is a loaf of honey whole wheat that I made last week. My husband milled the flour for me, which is a treat.

Wait until he finds out that I’ve been reading about how to grow wheat in our USDA zone of 5b. 😉

Be well and happy weaving,

Kate K.
